"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

These words, carved on the Statue of Liberty in New York, reflect the unequivocal commitment The United States of America has to absorb immigrants from all over the world.

Founded by immigrants of the 18th century, US has always kept its door open for newcomers from around the globe. Throughout the years, millions and millions of immigrants – rich and poor, white and black, Christians and Sikhs alike – have entered the so-called 'golden door' and built their new homes in America.

While the first waves of mass-immigration to the US in the 19th century consisted mostly of Europeans seeking to flee the "old continent", the 20th century brought to America no less than 25 million immigrants from Latin America and Asia.

As a result, America has become the most culturally diverse country in the world. With over 300 spoken languages and dozens of religions, immigrants from around the world could easily find their way and feel at home in the United States.

According to recent estimates, America today is home for no less than 30 million foreign-born and for another 30 million children to foreign-born immigrants ('second-generation immigrants'). Together their number sum up to more than 20 percent of the total US Population.

Using the Green Card Lottery and other Visa programs, the United States is retaining its reputation as a country of immigrants, founded by immigrants, for immigrants. Whether a brilliant scientist of a simple farmer, Hispanic or Asian, a Protestant or Muslim, one can always make America his or her home.
