Hispanic Heritage Month

Every year the Hispanic community celebrates it’s heritage.
The Hispanic minority is the fastest growing minority
group in America – almost 14% of the nation's population.

One of the great qualities of the United States is their advancement in celebrating diversity. From September 15th until October 15th, the people of the red, white and blue will rejoice in the Spanish speaking culture. It is estimated that over 43 million people are Hispanic constituting almost 14% of the nation’s population. It is the fastest growing minority group in America.

In 1968, the U.S. Congress proclaimed that September 15th would be Hispanic Heritage Week, and in 1988, it expanded the cultural celebration as a month long event. Hispanics are not defined by a specific country – only by tracing its roots back to Spanish speaking countries and nations.

The first Hispanic member of Congress Joseph Marion Hernández from Florida in 1822 and the first U.S. Senator was New Mexico native Octaviano Larrazolo in 1928. Luiz Walter Alvarez was the first Hispanic female astronaut and flew four shuttle missions which started in 1991. Severo Ochoa was the first Hispanic to win a Nobel Peace Prize in the medicine 1959 for his synthesis of ribonucleic acid.

Hispanic Americans have contributed so much to the development of the United States. Whether it is in the fields of the military, music, sports, film, literature, or government, the U.S. residents who come from Spanish speaking cultures have added to the tapestry of what it means to be an American. The Hispanic Heritage Month gives an opportunity for all to appreciate the advancements and pay tribute to a people who have given so much of their lives to make America great.
