DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

America is all about the entrepreneurial spirit. Immigrants from around the world dream of opening their restaurant, computer software company or nail salon. Often, the circumstances at their own home country do not give them the opportunity to make a person’s vision of success true. Many come to these shores to take part in the American Dream and see if their idea will make them enough money to live the good life. How does one start a business in America? What tools do you need? Are there financial resources to help one get started? Just opening an Italian bistro in the heart of Manhattan does not guarantee you that thousands will come flocking through the door.

Research is the key to see if a business idea has potential of getting off the ground. It does not make sense to open a pizzeria, if there are already four operating in the neighborhood. Maybe, the residents of the area are not into take out food. It could also be the costs involved in opening a pizza shop do not give you enough profit. The rent is too high or the taxes, water expenses and maintenance are just too much to bear.

You need to consider your competition. Is there product better, cheaper or do they have better service? If there is no competition, why did nobody try the idea before? Research will help you to pick a location, know what potential profits can be earned and what the potential risks are.

If you looking to get outside money to help finance the business, you will definitely need to research the idea so you can develop what is known as a business plan. Banks or investors will not give you money just because you think an idea is good and will make millions. You need proof or at least a good analysis to back up your idea. Preparing a business plan is a mind-numbing task, but in the end it will help you put things into perspective. It gives you the opportunity to think things out until the end. The business plan will become your blue-print for success in the business.

It is wise to visit the U.S Business Administration website at www.sba.gov learn more about how to write a business plan and to see whether or not you have the entrepreneurial spirit to make it in America. Good luck.
